Arugam Bay Surf Competition Poster - Artful Travel™ Collection by Alecse

Arugam Bay Surf Competition – Vintage Travel Poster by Alecse

This Arugam Bay surf poster by Alecse pays tribute to the legendary 2019 WSL International Surf Competition, hosted directly on the beachfront of Upali Beach in Sri Lanka. Designed in a bold vintage aesthetic, the artwork captures the raw energy of Main Point — one of Asia’s most iconic right-hand breaks — using retro tones, layered textures and Alecse’s signature halftone finish.

Visual description

The composition centres on a surfer carving through a glassy shoulder, with the rocky Arugam Bay headland silhouetted behind him. Soft blues, warm neutrals and a contrasting sunlit foreground create a dynamic sense of motion. The halftone grain and hand-painted textures mimic classic surf contest posters, giving the piece a timeless, collectible feel.

About the place

Located on Sri Lanka’s remote East Coast, Arugam Bay is considered one of the world’s top surf destinations. Its famous Main Point offers long, fast rides and becomes the heart of the surfing community during competition season. The 2019 WSL event brought global attention to this coastline, with Upali Beach — Alecse’s former surf retreat — serving as a key gathering spot for athletes and spectators.

Alecse’s artistic style

Alecse combines photography, digital painting and a refined halftone technique to recreate the charm of mid-century sports posters. Larger sizes reveal more visible grain, lending an authentic retro-print look while preserving fine-art sharpness and colour depth.

Fun fact

Although it became the unofficial visual identity of the event, this design was never part of an official WSL release — making it one of the few existing collectible posters connected to the 2019 Arugam Bay competition.

Perfect for surf lovers, collectors of vintage competition posters, and anyone who treasures Sri Lanka’s wild East Coast aesthetic.

Limited to 300 copies worldwide: A certified collector edition, never to be reprinted.

Alecse’s Vintage Style: blurs & grains

This vintage travel poster of Arugam Bay Surf Competition Poster reflects Alecse’s distinctive artistic approach. Through his signature half-tone render, the artwork evokes the atmosphere of Sri Lanka with a timeless retro aesthetic.

Alecse's Original Travel Posters are celebrated for their unique half-tone render, a signature style that plays a crucial role in their appeal and authenticity. This distinctive digital effect is intentionally used to mimic the old poster printing process, where colors were rendered by the juxtaposition of dots of different sizes and colors. This method is a nod to vintage aesthetics, giving each poster a classic, retro look that aficionados of vintage travel and retro posters appreciate.

Half-Tone vs. Pixelization:

  • Half-Tone is an artistic technique used to create shading and texture effects in images. It involves the arrangement of dots of varying sizes and spacing to simulate different shades of color. This technique was traditionally used in the printing industry to reproduce photographs and illustrations with a limited color palette, contributing to a poster's vintage appearance.
  • Pixelization, on the other hand, refers to an effect seen in digital images when they are enlarged beyond their resolution. This results in the individual pixels becoming visible, making the image appear blocky or mosaic-like. Pixelization is often considered a flaw or limitation of digital images, unlike the half-tone effect, which is a deliberate artistic choice.

like all his posters, Arugam Bay Surf Competition Poster by Alecse™ is printed in Fine Art 12 Giclées, ensuring high-quality reproductions that honor the original artistic intent. While these art prints are not meant to be crisp like photographs and intentionally include blurs and vintage effects, it's essential to distinguish these artistic choices from potential printing defects. A clear indication of a print's quality is the crispness of the signature and titles; if these elements are not sharp, it may indicate a printing issue.

For those interested in the intricate details of Alecse's work or wanting to appreciate the half-tone effect fully, we offer the option to receive a close-up picture in High Definition before placing an order. This allows customers to make informed decisions and ensures satisfaction with their purchase of vintage travel and retro posters, enhancing their collection with pieces that truly represent the artist's vision and the era's printing techniques.

Please contact us if you wish to receive a close-up picture of Arugam Bay Surf Competition Poster in High Definition before placing your order.
