ABOUT THE DISH

Gambas al Ajillo is one of the most iconic tapas found throughout Spain. Traditionally prepared with prawns gently cooked in olive oil, garlic and chilli, it has become a staple of Spanish dining culture, enjoyed in family restaurants, seaside taverns and bustling tapas bars alike.

Although versions vary from region to region, the dish perfectly captures the essence of Mediterranean cooking: simple ingredients, bold flavours and food designed to be shared around the table.

THE ARTWORK

In this playful composition, a cheerful shrimp chef proudly presents a generous plate of Gambas al Ajillo beneath the fictional banner of La Cantina Barcelona. Rendered in warm coral, terracotta and cream tones, the artwork evokes the golden age of Spanish advertising posters while embracing Cha’s distinctive graphic style.

The oversized shrimp character, elegant black linework and subtle halftone texture create a sense of movement and personality, turning a classic Spanish recipe into a decorative artwork full of charm and humour.

The result is a poster that feels equally at home in a kitchen, dining room, restaurant or holiday home by the Mediterranean.

THE LA CANTINA SERIES

La Cantina is Cha’s fictional celebration of Spanish food culture, inspired by the illustrated menus, vintage advertisements and neighbourhood restaurants that once defined everyday life across Spain.

Collectors may also enjoy pairing this artwork with Patatas Bravas Poster La Cantina and Sangría Poster La Cantina, two companion pieces celebrating other icons of Spanish gastronomy.

FUN FACTS

  • Gambas al Ajillo is one of the most ordered tapas dishes in Spain.
  • The dish is traditionally served sizzling hot in a small terracotta dish.
  • Olive oil, garlic and seafood form one of the oldest culinary combinations in Mediterranean cuisine.
  • Many Spanish families prepare their own regional version of Gambas al Ajillo at home.
  • The aroma of garlic prawns cooking is often considered the unofficial scent of a Spanish tapas bar.
