CHA, REDEFINING FEMININE RETRO WITH SUBTLE POWER
Cha, Retro Poster Artist: Redefining Feminine Retro with Subtle Power
Cha is a contemporary poster artist whose vintage-inspired style, love for Asia, and discreet yet undeniable feminist vision are captivating a growing international audience. With a foundation in art history from Christie’s and art market taxation from Sotheby’s subsidiary IESA, Cha originally set out on a career path focused on the business side of art. Years later, her journey turned fully toward creation, a shift that brought both her analytical understanding and natural artistry into play, creating a unique foundation for her retro-inspired posters.
After years in Paris and Bordeaux with her husband Alecse, during which they launched the digital biography project Biobble, the couple moved to Sri Lanka in 2013, marking a creative turning point. They co-founded Upali Beach Surf Resort, a Bohemian Chic glamping concept set on one of Sri Lanka’s most beautiful beaches, overlooking the famous Arugam Bay surf wave. Cha infused each room with an elegant yet earthy ambiance and managed the restaurant kitchens, creating menus and training teams to deliver an immersive experience for guests.
When Myretroposter launched, Cha fully returned to her artistic roots, bringing her love for the vintage aesthetic and Asian influence to life through her collections. The Great Indian Décor™, originally envisioned as an Indian-made textile line, celebrates the art of India’s iconic 1950s and 60s matchbox designs. Signed under her alter ego, Shree, this collection quickly found resonance among the Indian diaspora, making a sincere impression with audiences. Vintage Exotics™, Cha’s flagship and best-selling series, draws inspiration from Asian pop art, with vibrant, iconic compositions like Koinobori and Ramune. She continued to explore the retro aesthetic with Spanish Capsule™, capturing the nostalgic charm of 1970s Spanish style, followed by The Wanderer Maps™, a series of monochrome and dual-tone urban maps, and most recently, Soft Pop Studio™, which celebrates feminine portraits with a pop-comic twist.
Her feminist values resonate particularly through Soft Pop Studio™, where Cha draws on aesthetics and color harmonies that subtly evoke empowerment, and are further highlighted by her admiration for the mascot culture of icons like Amul in India and Japan’s Milky Girl. Cha’s work reflects her sensitivity to the themes of women’s empowerment and presence in society, ideas which are woven naturally into her creative choices rather than overtly expressed.
Today, Cha’s posters are traveling worldwide. Last year alone, her works were shipped to over thirty countries, solidifying her position as a rising talent in contemporary poster art.
