Mavericks Poster Surf Camp 73 - Artful Travel™ Collection by Alecse

Every surf session begins with a moment of anticipation. Standing on the shore, board under your arm, watching the waves roll in and wondering what the ocean has in store. Mavericks Surf Camp 73 captures this familiar ritual through a deeply personal scene featuring Roman and Sirius, the two sons of French artist Alecse.

Inspired by the spirit of vintage surf culture, this original retro surf poster combines a family photograph taken on Sri Lanka's southern coast, an imaginary surf camp and a playful nod to the artist's own story.

THE SURF CHECK: WHERE EVERY SESSION BEGINS

Before paddling out, surfers take a moment to study the ocean. They watch the sets, observe the wind, look for the best waves and decide where to enter the water. Known as the surf check, this simple ritual is as much a part of surfing as riding the waves themselves.

The original photograph behind this artwork was taken at Lazy Left, Midigama, on Sri Lanka's southern coast. Two young surfers stand side by side, their boards resting on their shoulders as they contemplate the ocean ahead.

There is something wonderfully universal about this moment: the excitement of what lies ahead, the connection with the ocean and the pleasure of sharing a passion for surfing.

MAVERICKS SURF CAMP: AN IMAGINARY PLACE WITH A REAL STORY

Despite its name, Mavericks Surf Camp is not a real surf camp. It is an imaginary destination created by Alecse, inspired by the timeless aesthetics of 1970s surf culture.

The name Mavericks is a tribute to the legendary big-wave surfing spot near Half Moon Bay, California, famous for its powerful waves and the extraordinary surfers who challenge them.

By borrowing this iconic name, Alecse gives his Sri Lankan family photograph the atmosphere of a fictional California surf camp, blending real memories with the nostalgic imagery of classic surf posters.

Fun Fact: The words Summer 73 are another playful reference, this time to 1973, Alecse's birth year. The poster doesn't depict an actual summer from the 1970s, but its title and visual style create the illusion of a vintage souvenir from another era.

A FAMILY MEMORY FROM SRI LANKA

The two young surfers featured in the artwork are none other than Roman and Sirius, Alecse's sons.

Photographed at Midigama, during the family's years in Sri Lanka, the scene captures a simple but meaningful moment: two brothers checking the waves before heading into the ocean.

For Alecse, who has always had a passion for surfing and travel, the photograph brings together two essential parts of his life: his family and his love of the ocean.

What began as a personal family photograph became an original artwork, transforming an everyday surfing ritual into a timeless celebration of childhood, adventure and shared memories.

VINTAGE SURF CULTURE, REIMAGINED

Part of Alecse's Artful Travels™ collection, Mavericks Surf Camp 73 combines original photography, illustration and digital painting with the artist's distinctive vintage-inspired halftone finish.

The composition features warm coral and terracotta tones, muted ocean blues and a softly fading sunset sky. The two young surfers form the central focus, their silhouettes and surfboards creating a striking graphic contrast against the open horizon.

Bold retro typography completes the design, evoking the spirit of 1970s surf posters, beach adventures and endless summers by the ocean.

Whether you're a passionate surfer, a lover of vintage beach culture or simply drawn to nostalgic coastal art, Mavericks Surf Camp 73 brings the anticipation of a perfect surf session into your home.

Alecse’s Vintage Style: blurs & grains

This vintage travel poster of Mavericks Poster Surf Camp 73 reflects Alecse’s distinctive artistic approach. Through his signature half-tone render, the artwork evokes the atmosphere of Sri Lanka with a timeless retro aesthetic.

Alecse's Original Travel Posters are celebrated for their unique half-tone render, a signature style that plays a crucial role in their appeal and authenticity. This distinctive digital effect is intentionally used to mimic the old poster printing process, where colors were rendered by the juxtaposition of dots of different sizes and colors. This method is a nod to vintage aesthetics, giving each poster a classic, retro look that aficionados of vintage travel and retro posters appreciate.

Half-Tone vs. Pixelization:

  • Half-Tone is an artistic technique used to create shading and texture effects in images. It involves the arrangement of dots of varying sizes and spacing to simulate different shades of color. This technique was traditionally used in the printing industry to reproduce photographs and illustrations with a limited color palette, contributing to a poster's vintage appearance.
  • Pixelization, on the other hand, refers to an effect seen in digital images when they are enlarged beyond their resolution. This results in the individual pixels becoming visible, making the image appear blocky or mosaic-like. Pixelization is often considered a flaw or limitation of digital images, unlike the half-tone effect, which is a deliberate artistic choice.

like all his posters, Mavericks Poster Surf Camp 73 by Alecse™ is printed in Fine Art 12 Giclées, ensuring high-quality reproductions that honor the original artistic intent. While these art prints are not meant to be crisp like photographs and intentionally include blurs and vintage effects, it's essential to distinguish these artistic choices from potential printing defects. A clear indication of a print's quality is the crispness of the signature and titles; if these elements are not sharp, it may indicate a printing issue.

For those interested in the intricate details of Alecse's work or wanting to appreciate the half-tone effect fully, we offer the option to receive a close-up picture in High Definition before placing an order. This allows customers to make informed decisions and ensures satisfaction with their purchase of vintage travel and retro posters, enhancing their collection with pieces that truly represent the artist's vision and the era's printing techniques.
