We know what you like (really?)

Etsy newsletter screenshot showcasing AI-generated posters claimed to depict Sitges, Spain, though the designs are inaccurate representations of the town.

When AI Meets Sitges — And Misses Entirely

This morning, we opened our inbox and found a newsletter from Etsy with a friendly subject line:

“Picked for YOU — because we know what you like.”

Well… not quite.

What it offered us was not one, not two, but three posters supposedly representing Sitges, all created with artificial intelligence.

And none of them — not a single one — actually depicts Sitges.

At all.

Instead of the real church, beaches, palm-lined promenades or signature white façades of the town, these posters showed:

  • A church with a baroque tower worthy of Rome,

  • A random Mediterranean street corner,

  • A beach with a lighthouse-style belfry (!?)…

All rendered in that now unmistakable AI “painted photo” style: perfect lighting, generic charm, but no soul — and certainly no Sitges.

Why This Matters

We’re not here to bash AI art. It has its place, and its uses.

But Sitges — like every real destination — deserves more than a vague coastal vibe.

It deserves to be seen, celebrated, and understood for what it truly is.

At Myretroposter, we’ve spent years capturing the essence of places through real observation, emotional connection, and artistic choices.

Whether it’s Alecse’s half-tone textures or Cha’s pop-inspired palettes, every poster is a love letter — not a hallucination.

Let’s Be Honest

Do we love Sitges? Yes.

Do we love design? Always.

Do we love supporting artists? More than ever.

So next time an algorithm says “We know what you like”… maybe take that with a grain of salt — and a glass of vermouth.
